Ceremony is a basic instinct that has been following us throughout the ages. Ancient cultures dating as far back as 70,000 years ago used the power of ritual so that they could collectively heal and connect in a new way. From shamanic rites such as fertility dances and hunting ceremonies, to today’s baby showers, graduations and weddings, we have often used ritual to mark the milestones of our universal human experience.
Elizabeth Gilbert wrote: “Ceremony is essential to humans: It’s a circle that we draw around important events to separate the momentous from the ordinary. And ritual is a sort of magical safety harness that guides us from one stage of our lives into the next, making sure we don’t stumble or lose ourselves along the way.”
With rituals that mark rites of passage, there is a strong sense of before and after, that life has been touched by the experience and given deeper meaning.
A wedding ceremony is a magnificent rite of passage, honoring the partners’ past and the journey that led them to one another, taking them into their future as they begin a new path together. Lighting the unity candle, placing the lasso, pouring the sand, jumping the broom, stomping the glass — these ritual elements are expressions of culture and love, forging and deepening the bond between individuals and community.
In today's modern society and with the current state of the world, ceremony is more important than ever. During periods of change and transformation, ritual motivates us by adding a sense of meaning and purpose to our lives. It provides us with a sense of renewal, removing us from the ordinary flow of life and placing us in a sacred space. We hosted our November wedding at Tumbleweed and can’t even put into words how magical the experience was working with them. When we first discovered Tumbleweed Sanctuary, we knew it was perfect for us. We wanted to capture the magic of the desert and the function of an established venue. With the gorgeous expanse of the natural desert and beautifully designed vignettes, they had everything we were looking for. We had our ceremony outside in the large stone labyrinth and it was truly a dream come true. Our guests were blown away by the beauty of this setting. There are so many possibilities for photo ops, ceremony and reception setups, and activities on their huge and open grounds. They already had much of what we needed, including tables and chairs, plus the spectacular beauty of the gardens meant we could cut down on the cost of decor- we didn’t need much else! We had a magical day in this beautiful setting and recommend it highly for anyone looking for a desert wedding.
